please explain to me the meaning of two sentences typed below,

  1. i wanted them to play the match.
  2. i wanted the match to be played.

In the same situation, there is no difference. In specific context, #1 could mean ‘them’ rather than ‘us’, where #2 does not carry that meaning; on the contrary, #2 could mean ‘played by anyone!’
