This rather campy entry?

Hi again,

Could you please let me know what campy means in the following sentence:

a few lines from his first rather campy entry below…

I understand it could mean exaggerated but according to my dictionary campy can also mean artificial, hyperbolic; or of a homosexual. So this is a rather confusing adjective. Is it used often?

Thanks in advance,
A

Hi Andreana,

The adjective is more usually written as camp and so by changing it to campy, the writer is using the word to suggest it is a bit camp. The words do have the general meaning of exaggerated or affected and are often used to describe a way of presentation or acting that for example when used to describe a man’s acting could be regarded as effeminate. I think the idea of being homosexual is hinted at but it refers only to the idea of being affected.
