"This means" vs "It means"

Hi,

I have this question which I couldn’t figure out by myself:

What is the difference between writing (or saying)

"This means " and
"It means "

Thanks in advance

Please follow this link It or that?

=)

Thanks for the quick reply

but I still didn’t get it. How can I use that discinction in my case?

Thanks again.

It refers to a thing that has already been mentioned.
compare these sentences:

I had a car, it was expensive. (It refers to the car and car isn’t here now)
This pen is red, Could you give me a blue one? (you can point to the pen)

Sorry for being impertinent. Let me give an example.

“You all tried to help me with examples but I didn’t understand it yet”.

So the correct is “it means I’m a dummy” or “this means I’m a dummy”??

Thanks again for replying and for being patient

I will use " It means …"
