The understanding of the vocabulary "double-booked"

The definition of double-booked is to promise the same room, seat, table, etc. to two different people at the same time. For example:

The Master Gardeners Club had to postpone its monthly meeting because the community center’s conference room was double-booked.

Based on my comprehension, both the Master Gardeners Club and another group accidentally reserved the community center’s conference room at the same time, so there seems to be a problem with the booking system. Is this analysis correct?

You are correct. Somebody made a mistake and accidentally booked two groups at the same time.

With bookings for individual people, the double-booking might be intentional. For example if a restaurant or hotel has room for 100 people, they might book 105 people. That’s because they know that some of them won’t show up. Airlines do this as a normal practice.

But if a large group is double-booked, it was probably a mistake.

Double-booked is also called over-booked.
