The two brothers devided the apple among themwo brothers

The two brothers divided the apple between them.

The two brothers divided the apple between themselves. ???

It depends, and “themselves” is not the only choice.

Jimic is probably correct, Haihao. I suspect that Ganesh meant the apple was to be divided between the brothers, rather than another set of people. I was too focused on changing ‘among’ to ‘between’ and carelessly left ‘them’ as it was…

If the apple were being divided between a different set of two people then my sentence would have been fine.
If the apple were being divided between a group larger than the two brothers then ‘between’ would have to be changed back to ‘among(st)’.

Exactly, BN. I suppose:

  1. “the two brothers” divided the apple for the group of their own, say, four members, and one half of the apple for themselves and the other half for the rest.
  2. “the two brothers” divided the apple for another group of people.

We’re going to end up with apple sauce again at this rate! Where’s the mallet?

 !!

And why are the victims always apples? lol
