Hi,
The word you are probably looking for is ‘cresset’. I didn’t know it, but that’s what my dictionary says.
Best regards.
Olga, note that none of the “equivalents” given for “torch” in the thesaurus are really equivalent. None of them mean the wooden stick that is lit on fire. “Cresset” doesn’t exactly mean “torch” either, and hardly any native speakers know that word anyway. A cresset has a cup on top that holds flammable liquid, so that’s not a true torch.
The fact is that the only word native English speakers really use for a stick lit on fire is “torch”. We don’t relate it in our minds to torture at all.
The British also call a hand-held electric light a “torch”, but we in North America call it a “flashlight”.
Thak you everyone, Jamie, in particular,
However, what is a correct way of saying this word? Does it also mean a drug cigarette?
Please look at my context and the way I pronance this sentence and word.
Inside the decorative windows there is a space for torches that could be placed to illuminate the bridge.
Thank you in advance
Olga
