The Solace of Open Spaces

It’s May and I’ve just awakened from a nap, curled against sagebrush the way my dog taught me to sleep––sheltered from wind. A front is pulling the huge sky over me, and from the dark a hailstone has hit me on the head.

What is a “front”? Is it a front door?

This is a weather front, a change as a mass of cooler or warmer air comes in. On a weather map you will see it denoted as a line separating the cooler air from the warmer air and there’s usually an indication of which way it is moving. It often brings rain, and sometimes hail.

Since it’s bringing hail, I would guess it’s a cold front.

Yes, meteorologically, it is the forward edge of an advancing mass of air. (Oxford)
