Hello everybody
I am mystified…badly mystified
Could anyone please tell me if " the police" could be used as follows?
1- THE POLICE IS COMING.
2- THE POLICE HAS ARRESTED HER.
If not, then why the army is used like this?
Can I say?
1- The army have…
2- The army are…
Please enlighten me.
Tom
Just one of those things, Tom…
police = plural, policemen = plural, policeman= singular, police force = singular
“army” is treated similarly to “police force” (singular)
It’s probably best to think of “police” as being similar to “policemen”. You’ll sleep easier.
