The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini - Summary and analysis chapter one

Good afternoon everybody,

I started reading The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini yesterday. I have read the chapter one and I want to write a summary and analysis for every chapter of the story. I think it is a good way to improve my English, in both reading and writing. And here is my fist summary and analysis of the chapter one of The Kite Runner.

With 322 words, the chapter one is short and it is the opening of the story. It opens with the words “December 2001”. A nameless narrator refers back to the winter of 1975. According to him, it was the day he became what he is today. The narrator mentions a phone call last summer from a friend in Pakistan, Rahim Khan, and unatoned sins. Through what the narrator tells in this chapter, the readers can guess that this character must has an unforgettable past and he must did something very wrong and terrible in the past, that has made him feel guilty in a long time, 26 years. After the call, he went for a walk and noticed the kites, soaring in the sky. And he recalls Hassan, the harelipped kite runner and list names such as Baba, Ali, and Kabul. He regretted about the past, and the after thought “There is a way to be good again.” showed that he wants to do something to atone for his fault. The chapter ends with another reference to 1975 and the assertion that the event that transpired in the winter of 1975 made him what he is today.

Please correct my writing and give your comment. Thank you so much!

TOEFL listening discussions: A conversation between a student and a university service representative

Good afternoon everybody,

I started reading The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini yesterday. I have read the FIRST/OPENING chapter and I want to write a summary and analysis for EACH AND every chapter of the story. I think THIS WILL BE a good way to improve my English, in both reading and writing. Here is my fist summary and analysis of the FIRST CHAPTER of THE BOOK. (We already have been told the title.)

With 322 words, the FIRST CHAPTER is short and it is the opening of the story.
It opens with the words “December 2001”.

A nameless narrator refers back to the Winter of 1975. According to him, it was the PERIOD WHEN he became THE PERSON THAT he is today.

The narrator HIGHLIGHTS a phone call HE RECEIVED last summer from a friend in Pakistan, Rahim Khan, and OF HIS MAKING A CONFESSION OF HIS FORMER unatoned sins.

Through what the narrator tells in this chapter, the readers can guess that this character (Rahim Khan??) must HAVE an unforgettable AND REGRETTABLE past and he must HAVE DONE something very wrong and terrible in HIS past, that has made him feel guilty EVEN AFTER 26 years.

After the call, HE went for a walk and noticed the kites soaring in the sky, and he recalls Hassan, the hare-lipped kite runner, and listS names such as Baba, Ali, and Kabul. ( I found that confusing.)

He regretted HIS past ACTIONS, and HIS THINKING “There is a way to be good again.” showS that he wants to do something to atone for his ACTIONS.
The chapter ends with another reference to 1975 and the assertion that the event that transpired in the Winter of 1975 made him what he is today.

OK Hoado, I think your summary is very well written, and that you can attribute your excellence to having spent many hours here of our Forum.

I became confused in your not clarifying who was actually having the regrets, the narrator or Rahim Khan. To my mind I do not understand who is being described here.

Your reading aloud is really good.

Kitos.

Good afternoon Bill,

Many thanks for your correction.

Have a nice day!

Great Book I read it a few years ago and watched the Film
I think it was the No 1 best seller?

Afghanistan - You won’t get a better place to fly a kite.

Somehow the symbol of the Kite in the sky is a "Timeless"connection between the past and the present.

Moving

Jamie

What a fantastic idea Hoado, I wish you continue to do that. Nice job my friend.

Mixmixi

Hello Jamie and Mixmixi,

I am glad to receive your comments. Thank you.

Jamie, you are right. I also heard that this book is one of the great books and the N0 1 best seller. This evening I started to read the chapter two. I am so curious to know about the day in the winter in 1975, that made the character what he is today, and I am also very exciting to find out what he has done in the past, that he can’t forget even after 26 years, and what he will do to atone for his actions.

I do not know much about Afghanistan, so I hope I will learn some knowledge about this country from Khaled Hosseini’s book.

Yes, Mixmixi, I will continue to do what I have started: summary and analysis each and every chapter of the book. Have you read it, Mixmixi? If not yet, I hope you will find time to read it and share your thoughts about the book with me and other friends here, on the Forum.

Have a nice time!

Hi Hoado,
For the time being, I am reading a book by Hermann Hesse called “Demian” but I would like to read it after I’ve finished this one. Here is a plot summary of this book by Wikipedia:

Emil Sinclair is a young boy who was raised in a bourgeois home described as a Scheinwelt, “Scheinwelt” being a play on words and means world of light as well as world of illusion. Emil’s entire existence can be summarized as a struggle between these two worlds. Through the novel, accompanied and prompted by his mysterious classmate Max Demian, he descends from and revolts against the superficial ideals of this world and eventually awakens into a realization of self.

Hello Mixmixi,

Yes, I hope that you will take time to read it after you finish the Demian by Hermann Hesse. Thank you for sharing the summary of the book. It would be nice to read your own review or to know your opinions about the book.

Have a nice day!

I’m Moving On
by Rascal Flatts

I’ve dealt with my ghosts and I’ve faced all my demons
Finally content with a past I regret
I’ve found you find strength in your moments of weakness
For once I’m at peace with myself
I’ve been burdened with blame, trapped in the past for too long
I’m movin’ on

I’ve lived in this place and I know all the faces
Each one is different but they’re always the same
They mean me no harm but it’s time that I face it
They’ll never allow me to change
But I never dreamed home would end up where I don’t belong
I’m movin’ on

I’m movin’ on
At last I can see life has been patiently waiting for me
And I know there’s no guarantees, but I’m not alone
There comes a time in everyone’s life
When all you can see are the years passing by
And I have made up my mind that those days are gone

I sold what I could and packed what I couldn’t
Stopped to fill up on my way out of town
I’ve loved like I should but lived like I shouldn’t
I had to lose everything to find out
Maybe forgiveness will find me somewhere down this road
I’m movin’ on

I’m movin’ on
I’m movin’ on

Hello Jamie,

I wanted to post the song with its video screen like you often do and have done many times on the Forum, but unfortunately I do not know how to do it. I only can post here the link to the video on Youtube. -)

Please tell me how to do it. Thank you.

Good morning Hoado. It is simple!

First find the video on Tube.
To the right of that page you will see the URL of the image/video.
Left click with your mouse on the URL, it will turn blue in colour.
Then right click and choose “Copy”
Transfer your copy to this page on the Forum.
After you post the URL you will find the video is on your posting.

Good luck … Kitos.
