the importance of using a had between you and better

Hello!

How important is it to write: "You had better come as soon as you can, before three if possible.

Can I write: You better come as soon as you can, …"

Is the had really necessary?

If you’re writing, it’s best to use “had”, because leaving it out would be too informal.

If you’re speaking, its best to leave it in (usually contracted to 'd), but in informal speech you can leave it out.
