The Green and the Blue?

Hi, is there any idiomatic meaning attached to ‘the green and blue’ other than in Amy MacDonald’s lyrics with the same title? Here are the line:

Well the sky, it always grows and the lights they never fade. There’s magic In the air, I can feel it everywhere.

But the green and the blue come between me and you. But I will always be true to you.

Ah, looking at the lyrics again I think she refers to the Glasgow football teams who depending on whether they win or lose wear a shirt with either blue or green stripes. Am I right?

Many thanks,
Torsten

–Never heard of that, Torsten. My guess is one of the couple is a Celtic’s fan while the other is a Glasgow Rangers’ (you provided their colors). A kind of a Montecchy vs Capuleti story…

According to amymacdonald.co.uk/gb/biography/ you are correct about football shirts, except that the colours have nothing to do with winning or losing, but are the Glasgow teams’ regular shirt colours: green and white hoops for Celtic and blue for Rangers. The Rangers v. Celtic rivalry is also associated with protestant v. catholic.
