The German equivalent to trump card is Trumpfkarte

I’ve just realized that there is the English word ‘trump card’ which sounds funny now that Trump was the president of the United States and might win the next presidential election again. Interestingly enough ‘trump card’ is a compound noun just like its German equivalent “Trumpfkarte”.

Is Trumpfkarte the term used in the card game Bridge?
Is the same word used in “I played a trump” and “I trumped his ace”?

Yes, Trumpfkarte is used both in the literal sense and as a figure of speech. By the way, the word Trumpf is derived from the word “Triumph”, which is used in both German and English.

We also often use the term “Trumpf” instead of “Trumpfkarte”.
