the door is repaired

Hi,
Question 1:
A:The door is repaired.
B:The door has been repaired.
C:The door was repaired.
D:The door had been repaired.

Among the sentences, I think A sounds wrong but I can’t seem to find the reason. Anyone care to help?

Question 2:
A:The movie had been directed by Steven Spielberg.
vs.
B:The movie was directed by Steven Spielberg.

Can I know why do we need to use past perfect in sentence A if we aren’t comparing two things that happened in the past? Wouldn’t B (simple past) will do?

Thanks.

1 - they are all ok (more or less) depending on context.
However, of the 4, A is the hardest to think of contexts for

  • you have been repairing the door, you just finish and announce ‘Listen everyone, the door is repaired.’
…or it implies that the door is regularly repaired - “It’s a dangerous pub, the door is repaired every Monday after inevitable fights there at the weekend.”
  1. It can’t really be A without a comparison, so B would be best.
And in your sentence it’s hard to think of a good context for using past perfect at all.

Thanks Thredder. I was confused about question 2 because it is shown on a grammar website I’ve recently visited.
