I was watching television again and again I heard something strange, at least it sounded strange to me.

Is what appropriate in this sentence? Please, help me out @Alan

This sentence is correct with what. The reason I say that is because …

“That reptile” - meaning perhaps a bad person
“what you call a son” - defining who it is (son of someone), also sounding sarcastic
“has made me appear in a sleazy publication” - so this person has done something mean

Other examples I found: “that’s what you call a son” / “Mom, is that what you call a son?”
