that/apposition

Are these correct:

[color=indigo]1-He kept his cool until I tipped the tray over. That really got him mad: all that coffee being splashed in his brand new kitchen.

[color=red]2-He was a bit arrogant until John beat him in chess. That put him in his place: being beaten by an eight year old kid.

They look OK to me, except that “beat him at chess” is more natural. I would personally also hyphenate “eight-year-old”.

They are correct in an informal conversational, context.
