Tenses

[There is a sound at the door.]

A: [color=red]Do you hear something?

B: Yes. What was that?

=====> Why not “Did you hear something”?

Thanks.

Presumably because the sound is still going on when A starts to speak, but has stopped by the time B speaks.

Either that or the speakers just weren’t being particularly careful about their tenses.

Hi Ruifeng,

I agree that ‘did you …?’ would make better sense in that dialogue in view of the response ‘B’ gives using ‘was’.
