Tense used in summary

I used to get confused what tense to use in summarizing the passage. Basically, i am much used to with simple present tense. Is it correct to do so? Please clarify my doubt.Thank you in advance!

It depends on the nature of the passage. If you are summarising a work of fiction, the usual convention is to describe the characters’ actions in the present tense. However, if you are summarising a factual account of past events, you would usually use the past tense to describe those events. (There is a also stylistic device called the “historical present”, in which real past events are described in the present tense. This has a particular special “feel” that I personally do not much care for.)
