Apparently, the German rental car company Buchbinder calls their clients ‘tenants’. I thought a tenant is a person who rents an apartment, flat, house or any other piece of real estate. Is this just a bad translation?

Hi Torsten,
Interesting question. I imagine that simply ‘client’ would fit the bill but ‘tenant’ is quite unsuitable. The only one I can think of that might work is ‘renter’.

Hi Alan, I agree. I think they simply looked up the translation for the German term ‘Mieter’ which can is ‘tenant’. The trouble is that “Mieter” refers to a client renting a car as well as to a tenant while ‘tenant’ is only used in connection with real estate.

Hi Torsten,
I think that the word that is needed is ‘hire’ and then the person hiring would be a hirer.
