Hello,
Please could you explain what ‘supply half a dozen literatures’ means in the following extract?
For fifteen years he barely touched a non-medical book at all. On the other hand, he thinks he’s seen enough death, fear, courage and suffering to supply half a dozen literatures.
I think it means that he has gain so much experience over the past years that he could fill several books with it.
Thank you, Torsten, for your help!
Thank you for asking those interesting questions, they are very valuable to our community.
Great pieces for mentor sentences and modeling for students.
How about that:
"For thirteen years she barely touched a non-business book at all. On the other hand, she thinks she’s has been through enough relationships, heartbreaks, love stories and dramas to supply half a dozen literatures. "
To me, a literature is not just a book, but all of the books that make up a genre, or all the books written in a certain historical period or in a certain language - so science fiction literature, 18th century English literature, 20th century feminist literature, and so on. So half a dozen literatures would be a lot of books indeed!
