subject verb agreement-'is' or 'are'

Hi Alan,

John’s family( is or are ) at the seaside.

Which is the correct answer ? If the answer is (is),may I know why?

Some see the family as a single unit (John’s family= it) and others see it as a group of individuals (John’s family = they). So both “is” and “are” are used*.
