Hi,
‘Speak’ essentially means using language to say something and ‘talk’ is also using language but this time to communicate with another person or persons as in:
Who were you speaking to this morning? indicates that you were using language and the interest is with you the speaker and what you were doing.
Who were you talking to this morning? indicates that this was a two way conversation - you were talking to/with another person.

Hi alan,
I can understand the context however I’m not 100 % sure on this. Can you explain litlle briefly with easy examples please.

Hi,
Let me try again. ‘Speak’ is the formal word, mostly. Let’s go to the noun forms: A speaker is someone who makes a speech, like a member of parliament/a delegate in a debating chamber. A talker is a word sometimes used to describe someone who never stops talking and who is very sociable. Then again a talk is much more informal given by someone who is telling people about their interests/hobbies/travels to a group of people in a club or society.
One more example: I heard someone speaking suggests you heard a voice saying something. I heard someone / people talking suggests that they were having a conversation.
Any better?
Alan
