Sought vs asked for

The prosecution sought for a jail term of at least four weeks for the offence of making racist remarks, and a fine to be determined by the court for the possession of obscene films.

Is “for” in “sought for” redundant?

Thanks.

I would use ‘asked for’: The prosecution asked for a prison sentence of at least four weeks for the offense of making racist remarks and a fine, to be determined by the court, for possessing obscene films.

Sought and asked for have different meanings. Either one can be correct.

Sought is the past tense of seek. Seeking a jail term is not the same as actually asking for it.

The structure of the sentence is a little confusing. I would split it into two sentences, one for each offense.
