'Sorry, I forgot about it.' vs 'Sorry, I have forgotten about it.'

Hello teachers,
If this sentence, ‘Sorry, I forgot about it.’, was in the present perfect tense, would it be correct too?
A: Has the dog eaten yet?
B: No, it hasn’t. [color=blue]Sorry, I forgot about it.
A: Another time! You really are impossible, Peter.

Thanks in advance.

No, that doesn’t work.

refers to the time when the dog should have been fed and so only the past simple is appropriate.

As an aside, ‘Another time’ is very stilted. A native English speaker would say, “Again? You really are impossible, Peter.”

Hello Alan,
Thanks for your explanation. It’s very clear now.
