Soft skills now are so important to professional success. This makes many people to suggest that schools should emphasize the development of the students’ soft skills rather than technical knowledge or hard skills. Do you agree or disagree?

In this highly competitive world, it is becoming harder and harder for us to succeed. Not only do we need technical knowledge, but we must have soft skills as well. Therefore some people come up with the idea that schools had better place more emphasis on soft skills than on technical knowledge or hard skills. However, although soft skills are increasingly vital these days, technical knowledge is still of great importance. So we should pay attention to both rather than being partial towards either of them.
Actually, soft skills act as a catalyst for great success. That is because they help us to achieve our full potential in doing our work. For example, team-working skills bring us better studying results as well as more approaches to many complicated problems than working alone; interpersonal communication skills stand us in good stead to live in harmony with surrounding people; and persuasive speaking gives us a big advantage over opponents in winning a commercial contract. In other words, we will put ourselves at an extreme disadvantage without possessing these skills.
Nevertheless, the value of soft skills does not mean that we can play down the role of technical knowledge. In fact, if soft skills make it easier for us to be successful, then technical knowledge lay foundation for success. For instance, when applying for a job, we must have the degree that proves our abilities in the major. Otherwise, the applications will be turned down, let alone an interview where we can show off some extraordinary skills. Obviously, theoretical knowledge is the requisite for every success, without which soft skills mean nothing.
On the whole, the importance of soft skills in success is undeniable. But it does not mean that hard skills are second to soft ones. In actuality, they complement each other perfectly to become a determining factor in success. Hence, it is better for schools to help students hone both types of skills rather than attaching importance to one of the two only.
