I’d like to know in what contexts may I use “So do I” instead of “Me too”, for example, in this sentence : “I can play tennis, and you?” , the answer is “Me too” or “So do I”, or can be both? In what situation should I use one form instead of the other?
I think either of them are correct
“So do I” is more formal, “me too” is informal.
Furthermore, you can use “me too” as a reply to any kind of question; but “so do I” should not be used when the question contains an auxiliary verb, like “to be”, “can” and others; for in those questions, the auxiliary verb should be echoed: “so am I”, “so can I”.
A - I can play tennis.
B - So can I. / Me, too.
A - I am playing tennis.
B - So am I. / Me, too.
A - I play tennis.
B - So do I. / Me, too.
In this example, “do” echoes the verb “play”, because it is not an auxiliary verb.
Hi Tiara and Cerberus,
Thank you Tiara for the question “So do I or Me too” you raised here, and thank you for Cerberus for your explanation. I often doubt about using “So do I” and “Me too”. Before I used them both but I did not understand why and how and when use it. After I read Cerberus’s explanation, it is very clear to me.
Thanks.
Hoado
Thank you guys for your answers!
Timothy, are you a spambot?
In this case, then let use " me to" and get rid of complicated words…
