Slowly - The bear climbed slowly up the tree

Please read:

  1. The bear climbed slowly up the tree.
  2. The bear climbed up slowly the tree.
  3. The bear slowly climbed up the tree.
  4. The bear climbed up the tree slowly.
  5. Slowly, the bear climbed up the tree.

What sentences are correct? What is the rule?


#2 is unacceptable; the others are OK. The ‘rule’ is that some adverbs can be placed in a variety of positions without substantially changing the meaning. Note that the beginning and ends of sentences are positions of emphasis.
