Should it "Had it not for a typographical error by him..." instead?

If not for a typographical error by him that was spotted by an alert prosecutor, his offences, committed between 2014 and 2018, might not have come to light.

Should it be “Had it not for a typographical error by him…” instead?

Thanks.

Without a typo by him, discovered by an alert prosecutor, his crimes committed between 2014 and 2018 might not have come to light.

I think your original text is OK.
You proposed correction is perhaps a little better but it needs one addition.

“Had it not been for a typographical error by him…”

Use ‘But for’ which will put it straight!
