How many cars does she have. I being suprise as Beeesneees answered to sombody’s thread as correct when the person had written the above sentence. I had thought the subject should always agree with the verb and should read: how many cars does she has, instead of using ‘have’. Please if any one has an idea about please assist me to understand. Thanks
When verbs are used with auxiliary “do”, the main verb is always in the infinitive form (in this case “have”), and it is the verb “do” that inflects:
“She has a car” -> “She does have a car”
“She had a car” -> “She did have a car”
“I have a car” -> “I do have a car”
“does she have” in “How many cars does she have?” is an inverted form of “she does have”, and follows the same rules:
“How many cars does she have?”
“How many cars did she have?”
“How many cars do I have?”
By the way, I notice that you quite often post the same question several times. It’s only necessary to post each question once.
