She had her nails done

What form is this and why? Can you explain? Is it past perfect?
Is ‘she’ is the subject and ‘nails’ is the object, and ‘her’ a possessive pronoun?

I think that we can parse it like this:

She = pronoun as the subject.

had = verb.

her = possessive ADJECTIVE. (I think that newer grammar books use the term “possessive DETERMINER.”) (A “possessive pronoun” would be something like: This book is herS.)

nails = noun as the object.

done = past participle of “do” being used as an objective complement. That is, “She had her nails” is NOT complete, so you need something

to “complete” the meaning. So “done” is the COMPLEMENT: She had her nails done/ painted/ cut, etc.

An excellent book called The Grammar Book by Mesdames Celce-Murcia and Larsen-Freeman reminds us that a sentence such as yours means: She had someone do her nails.

HAVE A NICE DAY!
