hello everyone,
I need a little help with my language analysis
I have a sentence and I have to analyse the meaning, pronounciation, form, appropriacy, and context for such sentence.
the sentence is:
Would you mind if i closed the window?
and I have to analyze what problems mights students have with the MPFA ( meaning. pronounciation form and appropriacy), also why do we use the past form in the if clause?
please help me
i really cant get through camelia.
‘Would’ is not past; it is the present conditional II (as is ‘closed’). It is a polite form. I see no particular pronunciation problem. Its appropriateness cannot be judged without a context, but it is polite. Because the request is cast in a negative aspect, the response often confuses native speakers more than it does learners. If it is OK to close the window, the appropriate response is ‘No, of course not!’
thank you mister you really helped… but one more thing please… if i want to teach my students how to pronounce this sentence… where’s the stress in it? is it on the word MIND or on both MIND and CLOSED ? thanks a lot!
Would you MIND if I CLOSED the WINdow?
Primary stress is on ‘window’, secondary stress is on ‘mind’ and ‘closed’.
