[color=green]Some of these can only be suggestions without additional context, as guesses have to be made about what meaning you are trying to convey:
I came to live in Britain twenty years ago. It’s my [color=green]home now.
Everyone heard about the accident before I did. I was [color=green]last.
Antonym of ‘first’
The cost [color=green]of me running the house would be beyond our means. We couldn’t [color=green]afford it.
To afford - to have enough money to pay for
He was hit by the falling used [color=green]_____ and killed immediately(spot)
[color=green]Insert whatever fell! rock, debris, brick, tree, piano!!
When he’s reading, he’s unaware [color=green]me of what’s happening around him(lost)
[color=green]You chose the wrong word. ‘me’ doesn’t make sense. Using ‘of’ instead means you don’t have to use ‘lost’. If you want to use it, then you could say,
“When he’s reading, he’s lost to what’s happening around him.”
My sister and her next door neighbor dislike each other intensely(love lost)
[color=green]The sentence is fine as it is, otherwise you could say:
“There is no love lost between my sister and her next door neighbour.”
She looks not only older but also foolish in those clothes(earth)
[color=green]The word ‘earth’ doesn’t fit into that at all.
They live happily and farm money by working hard and fairly(penny)
[color=green]Sorry, I’m not sure about this.
A penny is a coin of a very small denomination. and we would say ‘earn money’ not farm it. Do you mean, “they save money”?
“They live happily and save the pennies by working hard.”
“Save the pennies” means manage to save very small amounts at a time. It’s usually used to imply saving small amounts over a very long period until a large amount had been accrued. “They spent years saving the pennies to be able to afford their dream holiday.”
She feels satisfied with her family and devote[color=green]s all her time to it[color=green]them.(bird)
[color=green]I don’t see how you can use ‘bird’ sensibly here or why you would want to.
I’m embarrassed about my mistake. Please don’t mention it to anyone else(draw)
[color=green]I’m embarrased about my mistake. Please don’t draw attention to it."
These were ferries sailing from Dover to Calais and in other directions(forth)
[color=green]There were ferries sailing to and fro between Dover and Calais,
would be my personal first choice, otherwise:
There were ferries sailing back and forth between Dover and Calais.
I shall always keep the memory me our meetings in my heart(treasure)
[color=green]I shall always treasure the memory of our meetings (in my heart).
This kind of exercise requires us to rewrite the sentences without changing the meanings. And once again, sorry for the typo of T9. So, please help of to rewrite the rest. This is an exercise.
I haven’t changed any of the meanings.
The problem with what you call typos is that they aren’t typos at all. They are the results of using predictive text. With a typo it might be easy to work out what you mean. With predictive text this is not so straightforward. If you make errors due to predictive text then you will have to provide the correct word in order to be helped.
For instance, now that you have explained you were using predictive text, I can see that more than once you have used ‘me’ instead of ‘of’, because ‘me’ is the default suggestion for that combination of key presses. I can also quickly work out that ‘farm’ was supposed to be ‘earn’ for the same reason. However, I do not know what ‘bird’ or ‘penny’ or ‘earth’ were supposed to be, and I have no intention of inputting the text into my mobile phone just to find out if you can’t be bothered to supply them.
I suggest you read any messages written in predictive text very carefully before you press ‘send’.
Also in sentences 1,2 and 3, you did not give a suggested word at all.
The 1st, 2nd and 3rd sentences are rewrite sentences using the word suggested.ie the words after the sentences given(after the dot). And you also corrected the wrong words correctly.
There are no words suggested in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd sentences in post #1.
They all consist of a sentence ending in a full stop and an unfinished second sentence ending in an ellipsis (a seties of three dots indicating an omission).
I have not corrected the words ‘earth’ bird’ or ‘penny’ because I don’t have a clue what they should be. They are your typos, not mine.
For all I know, there are also other incorrect words. For example, is ‘spot’ really supposed to be that word, or should it be another word. Only you have any way of knowing!
In the 3 first sentences, the words preceding the dots are the beginning of the rewritten sentences which will have the same meaning with the original ones. About the words earth, spot…they’re the correct words given and you’ll have to use them in the rewritten sentences regardless of their positions in the new sentences.
In that case #1 doesn’t make sense. If you remove the preceding sentence, how will you know what ‘it’ refers to? You would at least need to start the sentence “Britain is…”
“Britain is my home.”
If you also want to make reference to the 20 years, then you would have to use ‘has been’ instead of ‘is’:
“Britain has been my home for the past twenty years.”
#2 - I was last to hear about the accident. #3 - We couldn’t afford to run the house.
#4 What is the word ‘used’ supposed to be?
He was hit by the falling ??? and killed on the spot.
#7 and #8 - Are totally screwed up questions, unless you have made some big typos in there somewhere. They make no sense.
#9 - Why should I continue to make any effort to help you? despite my request, you have still not supplied an appropriate word instead of ‘bird’?
I have given you the answers for #5, 6, 10, 11 and 12.
In the 7, 8, 9, the words in the brackets are correct as in my papers. In the 1, It’s my will be the beginning of the new sentence which will have the same meaning as the sentence’s preceding it but don’t need to have any relations, ie the preceding sentence is the original one and the It’s my…is the sentence after being rewritten. Similarly, the remaining are rewritten.
BS - I’m equally certain it’s not correct. It’s BS.
When your teacher gives you the answers to this exercise, I would be very interested in hearing what they are supposed to be. I’d also like to know if he thinks any of the answers I have provided are wrong - and which ones.
No Bee, I don’t think any of your suggested answers is not correct. However, we Vietnamese don’t make English. We just try to use it properly. So, these structures must exist. I stopped my teacher’s course some months ago and these exercises are what I told my friend to get for me. The answers are available but I haven’t met my friend for a long time. Hope to receive more of your assistance including your, MM’s and other moderators’. Thank you.
Yes of course. All these exercises are taken from books certified by British Council. However, you can’t search for them on the Internet just because they’re not of any available materials. They’re all for language students and not publicised or in other words, confidential. My teachers are senior lecturers of the National University of Foreign Studies. So, they have right to give them to us. That’s why I know for sure that they’re correct. By the way, one sentence making me get mad Under no circumstances should you phone the police. Lexically, it means You shouldn’t phone the police by any means. But what I want to know is how you’ll rewrite it using LAST.
I was not asking what books you are using. I was asking what type of course you are taking. In other words, are you in public school and taking an English course, or are you taking a class outside of your regular school?
I doubt it. We tell you the sentences can’t be right and you say they must be because you got them from a friend who had them from a teacher who had them from a book which isn’t available anywhere.
