Please look at the exercise below.
Rewrite this sentence:(using suggested word)
1.We have made neither a profit nor a loss this year.(EVEN)
The answer is ‘‘We have broken even this year’’.But I don’t understand it very clearly because the meanings of the 2 sentences don’t seem to match each other And I don’t think ‘‘even’’ is a clear word that can help us to find out the answer because the second sentence ‘‘We have broken…’’ also sound quite good without ‘‘even’’

To break even = to make neither a profit nor a loss. It is an idiom.
