Sentence rewriting: We have made neither a profit nor a loss this year.

Please look at the exercise below.
Rewrite this sentence:(using suggested word)
1.We have made neither a profit nor a loss this year.(EVEN)
The answer is ‘‘We have broken even this year’’.But I don’t understand it very clearly because the meanings of the 2 sentences don’t seem to match each other And I don’t think ‘‘even’’ is a clear word that can help us to find out the answer because the second sentence ‘‘We have broken…’’ also sound quite good without ‘‘even’’
Please help me.
Many thanks.

To break even = to make neither a profit nor a loss. It is an idiom.
