room vs. space

Hello. I am having a problem with distinguishing ‘room’ from ‘space’. What’s the difference? Can I say “there is a lot of space is my flat” of “room” is more right and usual?

In the sense you are using them, “room” and “space” are very close in meaning, and your sentence would work OK with either (apart from the typo “is” for “in”). My feeling is that “room” is a more “personal” word, and “space” is more “impersonal” but it’s quite a subtle distinction. As usual with near-synonyms, there are certain situations and expressions where only one word is idiomatic, or one word is usually preferred; for example, “waste of space” rather than “waste of room”; “room for improvement” (usually) rather than “space for improvement”. These have to be dealt with on a case by case basis.

Of course, there are other senses where the words are quite different. For example, you can send a rocket into space, but not into “room”. When used as countable nouns, “a room” is a closed-off area of a building, while “a space” is much more general and can mean any empty or available area.
