Right in Turn Right

Hello mentors,

I am confused about the word right in this phrase:

turn right = direction

what part of speech is that? Is that an adjective?

Thanks!

Julius

Hello,

Great question!

I checked my dictionary. It says that “right” in your kind of sentence is an adverb. [ “ad” (“to”) + “verb”]

In other words, it is a shorter way to say “Turn TO THE RIGHT.” (As you know, “to the right” is a prepositional phrase used to modify the verb “turn.” Thus,

it is an adverbial element.)

Wow! It’s a very clear explanation!

Thank you very much James M.
