release vs come out

  1. The movie is releasing in 10 theatres next Friday.
  2. The movie is coming out in 10 theatres next Friday.
  3. The movie is releasing next Friday.
  4. The movie is coming out next Friday.

Can someone please tell me which of the above sentences sound natural?

Hi. Nos. 2 and 4 sound natural. “Release” is transitive and therefore requires a direct object. Your use is improper.

Thanks a lot, Mordant. I thought release could be used as an intransitive verb too.

Wouldn’t ‘release’ be more passive than ‘come out’?

The movie is being released on Friday… would be ok, but the movie is releasing sounds weird to me too.
