Question About Sentence Structure

Which one of the following is correct, and why?

so wistfully he walked away?
so he wistfully walked away?
so he walked away wistfully?

Are there rules dictating where the adverb (wistfully), verb (walked away), and pronoun (he) are supposed to go?

Thank you.

Hi EnglishDude,

The word order is your choice and it depends which word you wish to emphasise. I would suggest that in the first sentence you should put a comma after ‘so’ to suggest ‘as a result’ ‘and then’. If you don’t put the comma, it would read ‘so wistfully’ suggesting wistfully to such an extent’ and you would expect this sequence: so wistfully … that.
