Hi,

  1. Just another riddle from a dictionary, what was it about: “Work was put in hand to tackle four tasks”?
  2. Would “switch between work and study” have the same meaning as “alternate work with study”?

Sorry, wasn’t correct, as ‘task’ was being defined, with ‘tackle’ brought as an example of “verbs frequently used with ‘task’ as the object” – if it’s making a difference.
If not: “Many problems could be avoided if people learned to take each other as is” – does it need correction?

I’m not certain I follow your line of questioning about ‘tackle’, but ‘tackle’ means ‘deal with’ in your example, and a common usage is ‘to tackle a task’.
Work was put in hand to tackle four tasks.
Work was organised/controlled to deal with four tasks.

“Many problems could be avoided if people learned to take each other as is,” needs no correction.

How do you greet the kids that show up on your doorstep trick-or-treating?

Seriously though, I don’t understand all this hubbub about Halloween. Why do grown-ups choose to dress up in weird looking costumes and walk on the streets in this attire.
I’ve never done that. I think it’s a bit silly.
When kids do it, I understand it. But why adults would engage in such behavior is beyond my ken. Maybe it’s a cultural difference.

‘Trick or Treat’ is an American import (Yeah, thanks for that!) which has only caught on in the last decade, and only the children knock doors (though the responsible parents are often close at hand).
Thankfully, the ‘Trick or Treat’ element has not really taken off around here yet (other than with groups of irresponsible youths). Children around here tend to greet homeowners with ‘Happy Hallowe’en’ (a saying which I’ve always thought to be something of an oxymoron) rather than ‘Trick or Treat’.

I live in a quiet area off the beaten track. No children came to my door. If they had, I’d have ignored them.
