Pronunciation of minute

Hello,

When “minute” is used “tiny”, it is pronounced as [mainjut]. But should it be…? I guess some people could say it like [minit], as it is. I wonder people would say wrong if I say it [minit] in the phrase like “in minute detail”.

Thank you in advance,
sweetpumpkin

Minute meaning tiny is pronounced my - noot
( noot rhymes with boot )

Minute meaning 60 seconds is pronounced min - nut
( min rhymes with sin or tin - nut like you eat )

Thank you for your attention. I’m wondering if it is completely wrong if I pronounce it [minut] when it should be pronounced [my-noot].

In American English it would be completely wrong to pronounce the adjective ( tiny ) the same as the noun.

In this instance, if you use the wrong word/pronunciation the listener will be totally baffled as to what you are saying, not just think that you mispronounced the word.

One additionally thought.
@NearlyNapping gives the pronunciation of minute(tiny) as my-noot, which is of course correct, but some of us say it my-nyoot

Here you can hear both versions.

I realize after listening to those recordings that the word minute ( time ) is pronounced min-it instead of min-nut like I said before.

I think the second vowel can either be pronounced as a short ɪ or simply as a shwa. ˈmɪnɪt or [ˈmɪnət]

All of my sources, both American and British dictionaries, show the ‘it’ sound - mɪn ɪt.

Merriam Webster shows a shwa.

I have been sitting here muttering to myself:

I think that in some circumstances I might tend to say one or the other, but in reality, with the emphasis on the first syllable and the second being mostly “t”, I don’t think anyone would notice.

Irrelevant fact: Some businesses use names like “Minit Wash”.
