promotions based on seniority or performance?

Topic:“In some organization, promotions are based on seniority, while in other organization, promotions are based on performance. Discuss the advantages of each position. Then indicate which position you think is best and why.”

It has been a question for many years, and kept managers’ mind busy for a long time. Which promotion system is better? Promotion based on seniority, or promotion based on performance? Each system has its advantages and disadvantages.

Consider organization with seniority promotion system. For example: government constitution. In these organization employees have stable situation. They know where they are, and do not worry about getting fire. Loyalty in these organizations is high. Experiences worker transmit their knowledge easily to new employees. On the contrary, performance is not high. In these constitution competition does not exist, and clients or customers are reluctant, and complaint from lack of quality and speed.

In other side, we have organizations that work based on performance promotion system. Clients and customers are satisfied in these situation because, employees work very quickly, and performance is higher than former cases. Every person in these companies sees his coworker as competitor. They do not know what will happen tomorrow. These companies suffer from lack of trust. Knowledge does not transmit well in these companies because of fear of future. Knowledge is power and everybody try to keep it. Experience workers leave organization very easily and in this way some knowledge lose in organization.

I think we should consider each of these organizations and create constitution that has both these good features. An organization that its employees do not scare from getting fired without acceptable reason. Also, motivate their workers to compete for some incentives. In this way company can promote its performance. In addition, I believe experience worker are wealth of each company because of their knowledge, the organization should use their knowledge to train new employee generation, and be sure that knowledge transition accomplish without disruption.

It has been a GREATLY DISCUSSED question for many years, and kept managers’ mindS busy for a long time. Which promotion system is better? Promotion based on seniority, or promotion based on performance? Each system has its advantages and disadvantages.

Consider AN organization with seniority promotion system. For example: A government constitution. In these organization employees have stable situationS. They know where they are, and do not worry about getting fireD. Loyalty in these organizations is high. ExperienceD worker transmit their knowledge easily to new employees. On the contrary, performance is not high. In these CIRCUMSTANCES constitutionAL competition does not exist, and clients or customers are reluctant, and complain from OF THE lack of quality and speed.

In other side ON THE OTHER HAND, we have organizations WHERE work IS based on A performance promotion system. Clients and customers are satisfied in these situation because, employees work very quickly, and performance is higher than former cases. Every person in these companies sees his co-worker as A competitor. They do not know what will happen tomorrow. These companies suffer from lack of trust. Knowledge does not transmit well in these companies because of fear of THE future. Knowledge is power and everybody TRIES to keep it. ExperienceD workers leave THESE TYPES OF organizationS very easily, and in this way some knowledge IS LOST in organization.

I think we should consider each of these organizations and create A constitution that has both these good features. An organization WHERE its employees ARE not scareD ABOUT getting fired without AN acceptable reason. Also, THEY SHOULD motivate their workers to compete for some incentives. In this way THE company can INCREASE its performance. In addition, I believe experience workerS are THE wealth of each company because of their knowledge. The organization should use their knowledge to train THE new generation OF employee , and be sure that knowledge transition IS accomplishED without disruption.

Hello Mr. Kitosdad,

Why cannot we use ‘THAT’ in this sentence instead of ‘WHERE’?
An organization [color=red]WHERE its employees ARE not scareD ABOUT getting fired without AN acceptable reason.

Thanks in advance,
Mohammad

Because we are talking about the location of the workplace.

Rewards are one thing that every person wants to receive it. In the business environment , rewards are given to employees as a promotion, and it is the one of the ways of recognizing employee’s dedicate and effort. Various organizations have different criteria for promoting the workers. Employees can be promoted either according to their seniority or their performance. Each position has its own advantage.

The first point I would like to make is that, getting promotions according to employer’s seniority provides some opportunities to the organizations. Senior workers have served within an organization for a long time. Because of that reason, they have experienced a variety of circumstances, so they have lots of knowledge about company management. In addition to that, these workers have witnessed some problems and successes over many years. Thus, when organizations have some difficulties about any issues, senior workers may easily cope with it. The experiences of senior workers are very important for crisis management. Because, they lead the organizations more effectively than the younger people. Also, they are able to provide the growth of organizations. Moreover, senior people can guide to the younger workers. They can teach lots of things to the younger generation about the company management. Senior people can be good guides and good friends for others.
Though, there are strong advantages that promotions are based on seniority, there are some more compelling advantages for organizations to get promotions according to worker’s performance. When promotions are based on performance, the competition among the company workers increases very much. Because, each employee tries to do best performance for earning a promotion. In this way, employees help to increase growth of the profit in the organization. Also, company workers who perform better than others set a good example to other workers. They can be useful leadership for other employees.
In conclusion, each criteria has its own advantages. A person who is promoted because of seniority brings knowledge of past successes and failures. In contrast, a person who is promoted because of strong performance brings to set a good example for others. I prefer to promotions are based on performance. Because, an employee who has a strong performance will demonstrate positive examples for other workers , so they will dedicate in order to be promoted.
