Preposion during / in

Hello
I noticed one of the most prepositions used with the phrase ( …the war ) is ( during ).
However, I also noticed some choose ( in the war )
So, which is more perfect ( during the war ) or ( in the war ) ?
Is there any difference between the two mentioned above ?

It really depends on what exactly you want to say. For example, we say 'During WWII millions of innocent people were killed by the Germans" and " Almost every country in the world participated in World War II

So, it really depends whether you want to focus on the entire period of the war or rather another fact.
