Hi,
Is there any difference between ‘favourable’ and ‘preferential’?
- I promise we will offer you the most preferential terms.
- I promise we will offer you the most favourable terms.
My teacher said they mean the same but ‘preferential’ is more formal. Is that right?
Many thanks.

We received a favorable response from the company. Our proposal has been accepted.
The reviews of her new album have not been favorable.
“Preferential” means “relating to a bias toward something.”
My younger brother always received preferential treatment. We could behave the same way, but he would always be rewarded more heavily.
Opponents of the ruling charged that the judge’s personal connections led to an unjust, preferential outcome.
The bus system has a preferential seating plan. Younger, able-bodied passengers are required to grant the anterior seats to the elderly and disabled.
