Plural forms: Potatoes are vegetables and cherries are fruits

Hi,

can I say: Potatoes are vegetables and cherries are fruits.

In my opinion it sounds strange.

Hi,

How about putting it this way: Potatoes are vegetable (Solanum tuberosum) and cherries fruit.

Hi,

It really depends whether you are talking about these things as separate entities (vegetables/fruits) or whether you are giving them a label, a definition (vegetable/fruit).

Likewise: cats are animals/cats are animal (not mineral or vegetable).

Alan, thanks for your answear. =)

Here goes another suggestion:

Potatoes are (root) vegetables and cherries a type of fruit.

Iā€™d use one of the following three:

A potato is a type of vegetable and a cherry is a type of fruit.

Potatoes are vegetables and cherries are fruits.

A potato is a vegetable and a cherry is a fruit.
