Last day before exam.
The reading passage claims that some of the painting of the famous painter of seventeenth century named Rembrandt are doubted that they were not painted by him, and one of these paintings is Portrait of an Elderly Woman in a White Bonnet. However the lecturer states that this is the original painting that was painted by Rembrandt only, and presents several reasons to prove it.
To begin with, the lecturer says that the experts have analyzed from the x-rays that the pigments of paints show that the painting was repainted hundred years after the original painting to increase the value of the painting, and the color of fur below this color is the same as the painter’s style. Thus this point casts doubt on the point stated in the reading passage about woman’s fur color.
In addition, the lecturer mentions that the original clothes of the woman were in light color, hence it perfectly shows that woman’s face should be illuminated face. Thus this point also challenges the information in the reading passage that the face of the woman should show the shadow rather than reflection of light.
Finally, the lecture asserts that some piece of wood were glued to the original painting in order to give grand presentation of the painting, and the original wood pieces are from the same tree which Rembrandt used from his other paintings. Thus this point also shows a contradiction to the assertion stated in the reading passage that the panel of several pieces of wood does not match to the painter’s style of painting.
Topic: It is more important to keep your old friends than it is to make new friends. Do you agree or disagree?
Friends are important in everyone’s life. They are as important as our family members. Some people can make new friends easily, hence they do not care for their old friends. However for me, it is difficult to make new friends, and importance of the old friends in my life is more. Therefore I agree that it is more important to keep your old friends than it is to make new friends. I feel this way because we spend many years to make one reliable friend; it is hard do find our best friend among the new friends, and I am not good in making new friends.
To begin with, finding our best friend takes many years of our life. Most of my friend are my childhood friends; it took me many years to make them my best friends. Now my old friends are my best buddies; they always help me in my problems to find out solutions and make important decision, and I can share my problems with them. They are always there to encourage me in my difficult situations.
On the other hand, I cannot trust on my new friends in sharing my personal feelings; I cannot trust for them because I have experienced this when I was in college. I shared my personal feelings and weaknesses to one my new friends, and he made fun of me by declaring my weaknesses to others. Hence I feel that it is more important to keep my old friends rather than keep making new friends.
In addition, some people cannot recognize people easily, and I am one of them. I take me many years to recognize people. I cannot easily trust on new people, so for me, it is important to keep my old friends rather than keep making new friends.
To sum it up, I feel that it depends on people to give more importance to their old friends or new friend. For me it is important to maintain relationship with my old friends rather then keep making new friend because I believe old friends are more reliable; it takes a few years to make the best friends, and I am not good in making new friends and recognizing them.
Thank you.
Hi, I thought both of your essays were pretty good. Your integrated essay was not that clear to me though. I had some trouble figuring out exactly how the lecture contradicted the reading passage. I liked your independent essay better. It seemed more clear and understandable. You did have some grammatical errors and mistakes in sentence construction. For each I think I would rate your integrated essay a 3.5 and your independent essay a 4 out of 5. Good luck on your test - please let us know your thoughts on how it went.
Please can you rate my integrated essay. It is on the same topic above
The article claims that there are doubts about who is the one who paints the portrait of an “Elderly Women in a White Bonnet” and provides three reasons to posits that it couldn’t be one of the famous painters “Rembrandt”. However, the professor explains that there are several experts that confirm that it is one of Rembrandt’s portraits and opposes each of the author’s reasons.
First, the reading states that there is no contrast between the cap and the fur collar of the coat which the woman in the portrait dressed. Conversely, the professor explains that by using x-rays, the found that this is not the original painting. They assume that someone add tis fur collar to increase the portrait’s value.
Second, the author implies that there is problem in painting light and shadow and the face of the woman must not be illuminated. On the other hand, the professor says that this is not seen in the original painting as the women was wearing simple light clothes that reflect light so it appear in that realistic way.
Finally, the article asserts that using a panel contain several parts of wood stick together is not the way of Rembrandt portrait. In opposition, the professor counters this by explaining that Rembrandt use this to expand the portrait to be more valuable and grand. Also, they found that the wood panel of the main portrait is made by the same tree wood Rembrandt use.
That’s why the professor confirmed that this is one of Rembrandt’s portraits.
Hi Caroline, I thought you did an excellent job in this essay. You captured all the points of the lecture and communicated them in a clear and effective way. You do have some grammatical errors that make parts of your writing sound unnatural, but they don’t really interfere with your clarity. I would rate this a 4.5 out of 5.
