Please help me carry these exercise books

Where I live, when a teacher asks his pupil, “Please help me carry these exercise books” the pupil will carry all the exercise books by himself; the teacher does not carry any of the exercise books.

To me, the words “help me” implies the teacher has to carry some of the exercise books.

How do native speakers interpret the above request?

Thanks.

II would suggest it is a request and implies this is a shared task.
