pikey

Hi,
Just quotations: “Richard Hammond has offended travellers by calling himself a ‘pikey’” (Informal offensive a Gypsy or Traveller–from a dictionary)

“But, ‘n’ word aside, we cannot go on like this, slimming down the once lively and vibrant English language until we’re left with nothing but meaningless platitudes sanctioned by the equalities lobby.
If we are not careful our world will soon be populated by members of the travelling and non-travelling communities, members of the over-eating community, the financially challenged community and those of a legally diverse heritage (criminals).
It’s going to make getting a sentence out in an emergency, or indeed telling a joke, quite impossible.”
(a gypsy or vagrant --from another dictionary)

–If I called a restless, keen on travelling, person a ‘pikey’, would I sound rude for you?

Yes.
It’s derogatory.
You would also be using it incorrectly, it doesn’t refer to a person who likes travelling.

How about ‘a drifter’ for a milder definition?

It would work better but may indicate someone of no fixed abode.
