People are travelling in greater numbers vs. People travel in greater numbers

“Whether it is a day trip to the seaside or a package tour to a foreign resort, people are travelling in greater numbers than ever before.”

Can I use the simple present and say “… people travel in greater numbers than ever before”?

Thanks in advance. Greetings.

I think either wording is OK, but I prefer the original.

Simplify the sentence.

People are traveling in greater numbers.
People travel in greater numbers.

Most people will interpret these two sentences exactly the same way. If you think hard about it, there is a subtle difference between the two, but not enough difference to be concerned about it.
