What is a “Penny Dreadful”?
It’s a cheap (costing one penny) 19th Century British paperback publication that usually featured gruesome stories appearing in parts over a number of weeks to build into the equivalent of a paperback novel. Each part cost one penny.
Penny - because that is what they cost.
Dreadful - because of the horrific type of story.
