1b. They announced that these three buildings had been built.
2a. If I had done this, I would have been wrong.
2b. If I had done this, I would be wrong.
3a. When had they arrived?
3b. When did they arrive?
4a. Where had she gone?
4b. she had gone to the cinema.
5a. Where did she go?
5b. She went to the cinema.
Please correct and comment.
6. Is this phrase - ‘Having been given’ a Past perfect phrase or a passive Past perfect phrase?

1a. They announced that those three buildings would be built soon. (It may make better sense now)
1b. They announced that the three buildings had been built as scheduled. (It may make better sense now)
2a. If I had done this, I would have been wrong. (Acceptable)
2b. If I had done this, I would be wrong. (Strictly speaking, not acceptable)
3a. When had they arrived? (Not acceptable. Past simple is better)
3b. When did they arrive? (Acceptable)
4a. Where had she gone when they called at her residence? (It may make better sense now)
4b. She had gone to the cinema when they arrived. (It may make better sense now)
5a. Where did she go? (Acceptable)
5b. She went to the cinema. (Acceptable)

  1. Is this phrase - ‘Having been given’ a Past perfect phrase or a passive Past perfect phrase? It is a passive perfective phrase. It can be related to ‘present’ or ‘past’ as you will find in the following sentences.
  2. Having been trained, I am able to perform my duties better. (I have been trained, so I am able to perform my duties better)
  3. Having been trained I was able to perform my duties better. (I had been trained, so I was able to perform my duties better)
