Past perfect + conjuction? + simple past

Hi,

Is it necessary to use a conjunction to connect the “past perfect” and the “simple past”?

Thanks

Your question is hard to envision without a sample sentence, David, but since a clause can have only one finite verb, I would certainly guess ‘Yes’.

There may be exceptions, like ellipsis of “that”:

  • She had destroyed the documents, she wrote; she had burnt them in the fire and … .
