Parallelism

Match adjective-noun expressions:
The committee will continue to monitor merchandise design, product quality, and check the feedback of customers.- I have no idea to make this parallel?

Match ing verbs:
Sending email establishes a more permanent record than to make a telephone call.

  • once again I have no idea??

Thanks!!

The committee will continue to monitor

  • merchandise design
  • product quality (and)
    Check the feedback of customers

They want you to change the last line into something that is similar to the two lines above it, that is, to make it parallel to the two lines above it. The construction you must use is adjective-noun, since merchandise design is noun + adjective (“merchandise” is a noun itself but it is used as an adjective here). In order to do this, you should change the third line into customer feedback.

[Incidentally, using many nouns as adjectives is less elegant and less clear than using preposition: if I were your teacher, I’d tell you to make them parallel the other way around - but never mind me.]

In the second sentence, you have “sending … to make …”: two verbal forms that are compared to each other, that are supposed to be parallel. Since they are parallel in meaning, the sentence will be clearer if they are parallel in form, too. Your task is to “match ing verbs”: you need to make both into -ing forms (gerunds), the first is an -ing form already. Try it.

Oh ok that makes sense. I looked in my book & I couldn’t find anything on that.

I wish you were my teacher…you make things so clear & easy to understand.

Thank you, you are too kind!
It seemed like you were missing some theory needed to make these exercises. It looked like you didn’t fully understand the terms used in the assignments. Are you sure you have read up on all the theoretical stuff every time you try an exercise?

I try looking up the terms on some search engines but they definitions and examples just are not working.

Okay, that’s a good thing to do, you can find much through search engines. But don’t you have a textbook that goes with your book of exercises? A book that describes the theory for each exercise, chapter by chapter?

I do. The chapter does not explain the terms in plain English terms.
